Sauce- make up before you do the dumplings. Cook until sugar is dissolved.
2 c sugar
2 c water
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
6 drops red food coloring (if wanted)
3 Tbs. margarine
Dumplings
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 c shortening
1/3 c milk
6 medium apples, peeled and cored (you can use them whole, slice them or grind in a course grinder)
Sift together dry ingredients, cut in shortening till mixture resembles coarse crumbles. Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened. In lightly floured board roll about 1/4" thick into a 18/12 rectangle. Cut into 6 squares and put apple in each square, moisten edges and fold corners up to seal them. Put in 8X12 pan and pour sauce in the bottom. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes or until apples are done. Serve warm with cream.
